Admission to the bar
LL.B, Université de Sherbrooke, 2009
Maxime is best described as being level-headed in the face of a challenge. He thrives on keeping a cool head in the heat of the action and acts as a reassuring presence when the situation calls for it, all qualities he developed over the many years he spent on the rink in front of the net. A true team player, Maxime can always be counted on to make himself available when solutions are needed. Just as he does on the golf course, Maxime blends his contagious good nature with a solid dose of seriousness, focus and thoroughness.
Maxime joined the Monette Barakett team in 2006 as a member of the Université de Sherbrooke Law Faculty’s cooperative education program. After completing three student internships and following his bar internship at Monette Barakett, he began practicing law in August 2009. After four years working with another firm, he returned to join the Monette Barakett team in September 2020.
Since he began practicing law, Maxime’s interests include everything that pertains to labour law and civil litigation. He advises on matters relating to individual and collective labour relations, and most notably on matters relating to workplace absenteeism, psychological harassment, administrative and disciplinary measures, and questions pertaining to reasonable accommodations. During the 2020 pandemic, Maxime was sought out by many employers looking to respond appropriately and in keeping with the law but also within the confines of standing regulations and government orders.
Maxime regularly puts his well-honed litigation skills to work in cases involving contractual and extra-contractual liability. He also earnestly defends the interests of clients before administrative, arbitration and legal tribunals, though he also relies on alternative dispute resolution whenever cases lend themselves to it.
Maxime works with a diversified client base which includes small and medium-sized enterprises as well as public and parapublic organizations. His clients appreciate the care he takes in finding well-suited individualized solutions.
Maxime has shared his expertise as a member of a number of organizational boards. He served as president during the establishment of the non-profit cultural organization Espace La Fontaine and also served on the board as well as on the governance and HR committees of the Saint-Jérôme regional hospital foundation.
